Though the rain relented to a degree and the mopping up continued, umpires Steve Gale and David Millns ultimately had little option but to abandon play for the day at 6.05pm with Kent marooned on their score from 2.20pm; 456 for nine. Geraint Jones had reached an unbeaten 69 while Charlie Shreck was basking on seven, having hit the first six of his first-class career.
