White to leave Northants in September

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Northamptonshire have released batsman Rob White after 13 seasons at Wantage Road. The 32-year-old former Loughborough University student has been told that he will not be offered a new contract when his existing deal expires at the end of the season.

White appeared to have a bright future in the game when he made 277 – the highest maiden first-class century in England – against Gloucestershire in only his fifth first-class match ten years. White put on 375 for the first wicket with Mark Powell that day but it was four years before he made his next first-class century.

Both White and Powell struggled to establish themselves during the tough regime of Northamptonshire coach Kepler Wessels with Powell dropping out of county cricket altogether.

White outlasted Wessels but a return of eight first-class centuries – the last of them against Glamorgan in May 2011 – and 5,706 runs in 112 first-class matches plus two more centuries in one-day cricket did not reflect his talent.

He featured in only two County Championship matches this season but was a regular member of Northamptonshire’s Friends Life t20 squad.
