Mott in frame for NZ coaching job

By Richard Thomas

Glamorgan have confirmed Matthew Mott, their head of elite performance, has been approached by New Zealand regarding their vacant role of head coach.

The Australian, who joined Glamorgan in April 2011, is believed to be on a three-man shortlist to succeed John Wright, who will step down in August.

Glamorgan chief executive Alan Hamer said: “We are keen to retain Matthew Mott’s services – however, like all good coaches, he has aspirations to work at the highest level.

“We have therefore given him our blessing to apply for the vacant head coach role at New Zealand Cricket. We understand that Matthew is one of a number of applicants being interviewed for this role and that the process will be concluded by the end of this month.”

But the club say they will be making  no further comment until the outcome of this process is known. If New Zealand were looking for a coach on recent performance credentials then 38-year-old Mott might not be their man, but he is still a coach who has plenty of admirers

But it is understood Mott has been invited for a final round of interviews along with former Otago and Kenya coach Mike Hesson and New Zealand assistant coach Trent Woodhill.
