Sarwan signs new two-year deal at Leics
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has signed a new two-year contract with Leicestershire.
Sarwan was recruited as Leicestershire’s second choice overseas player for this season after former Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf withdrew from his contract for personal reasons, but he has made a favourable impression in his first three months at Grace Road.
Sarwan, who has not played for the West Indies for a year, has scored 608 County Championship runs so far including two centuries.
“Ramnaresh has created a tremendous impression since he joined us,” said Leicestershire chief executive Mike Siddall. “We are delighted to have secured his services for another two seasons. He is a fantastic player and his influence on our younger players has been excellent.”
Leicestershire have also appointed batsman Josh Cobb as their new one-day captain. Matthew Hoggard, who led Leicestershire to the Friends Life t20 title last season, has decided to focus on captaining the side solely in County Championship cricket with Cobb taking charge for today’s Clydesdale Bank 40 match against the Netherlands at Amstelveen.
“Having seen how well Josh captained the side against Australia and the West Indies, Matthew Hoggard expressed a desire to hand over the one-day captaincy to Josh Cobb,” Siddall said.
“With the group stages of the Friends Life t20 competition now finished, Matthew feels that the time is right for that change and he will continue to lead the team in the County Championship.”
