Mohawk haircut is Carter's latest Lincolnshire tale
By Dave Bracegirdle
Nottinghamshire’s Andy Carter fulfilled a promise during his county's final Friends Life t20 match by allowing team-mate Steven Mullaney to give him a Mohawk haircut.
The fast bowler had agreed to the stunt, providing his number of twitter followers had exceeded 1,000 before the weekend of the game against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge.
Freshly-cropped, Carter returned the impressive figures of 3 for 12 from his four overs, helping his side through to a home quarter-final tie against Hampshire. Despite that, however, the 23-year old has no intention of keeping his new look for long and is likely to enlist his original ‘stylist’ to complete the task.
“Some people said I was mad trusting Mullaney with my hair but I thought it could only go one way – if I didn’t like I could soon whip it all off again.”
Carter’s twitter account (@andy_carter2011) has taken on a huge number of followers in recent weeks as tales of his life in the Lincolnshire countryside have become increasingly popular.
“It all started with two of the Nottinghamshire media guys, Michael Temple and Chris Botherway, trying to ‘up’ my profile and knowing my love of the outdoors they’ve come up with a few scenarios of Lincolnshire life, particularly farming and Lincolnshire sausages. They ask me what I’m up to and we take it from there but it’s amazing how popular it has become.”
At 6ft 7in tall, Carter has impressed many on-lookers this season, the first time in three years in which he has started the campaign in good health. One newspaper scribe has christened him ‘The Ginger Tremlett’.
“Touch wood - it’s going really well for me at the moment. I’m working hard in the gym and in practice and the coaching staff are managing my workload nicely.”
With one England Lions appearance to his name already, Carter is hopeful of a decent second half to the season to put himself in contention for a winter tour. Meanwhile he’s looking forward to his next challenge after doing the ‘Peter Crouch robot dance’ after reaching 500 twitter followers and now having the haircut for passing the 1,000 mark.
