Hampshire decide to do without Afridi

Hampshire have confirmed that Shahid Afridi will not be playing in this season's Friends Life t20 competition.

The Royals have given up waiting for the Pakistan star's visa to come through so will concentrate on qualifying without him following a comfortable win against Surrey at The Ageas Bowl..

With Australians Glenn Maxwell and Simon Katich both impressing in Afridi's absence, Hampshire will continue with a settled side following their fourth successive win.

But manager Giles White insists Afridi could be back in a Hampshire shirt next season. He said: "Although Shahid will not be returning to The Ageas Bowl this time around, the door is still open for him to return to Hampshire in future years should circumstances suit both parties.

"He obviously had a huge impact for us last year and has been missed. However, we are now deep into the 2012 competition and the side is settled so we don’t feel it is right to change that now.”
