Two-year deal on the table for Howell

By Richard Latham

Benny Howell is preparing to sign a contract with Gloucestershire until the end of the 2014 season. The former Hampshire player has been made the offer after a series of impressive displays, the latest being an unbeaten 55 to secure a fantastic Friends Life t20 win over Somerset at Taunton last night.

Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell talked about the deal after the game. "Benny has done very well in his time with us and his contract is sorted out," he said.

Howell himself is delighted and relieved to have secured a future in the game after leaving Hampshire last year and is looking forward to being part of an emerging team.

He said: "It's a good contract offer and I'm very pleased to have earned it after being given an opportunity by Gloucestershire. We are very close to agreement. There was a possibility I might have needed surgery on a thumb, but I have seen a specialist and that is all sorted out.

"I believe the club is going places. The players train so hard and the victory over Somerset just demonstrated the potential. It is exciting to be among a group of such talented young players. John Bracewell has a set plan for the next two years and I am looking forward to being part of it."
