Another Tanvir delay frustrates Worcs

By Paul Bolton

Worcestershire will be again be without Pakistan left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir for their Friends Life t20 match against Somerset at Taunton on Sunday.

Tanvir has finally been granted a visa which will allow him to play county cricket for the first time but he will not be able to collect the paperwork until Monday as the British embassy in Islamabad is closed over the weekend.

Worcestershire are hopeful that Tanvir will be able to collect the visa on Monday and then fly to England which would give him an outside chance of playing in Tuesday’s rearranged t20 match against Glamorgan in Cardiff.

The county originally recruited off-spinner Saeed Ajmal as their specialist Twenty20 overseas player but he was forced to withdraw from his contract after he was included in Pakistan’s squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka.

Worcestershire then turned to Tanvir but his arrival in England was delayed first by his inclusion in Pakistan’s T20 squad in Sri Lanka then by his addition to their one-day squad.

Tanvir was unable to travel direct to England from Sri Lanka as a tightening up of the visa application process required him to return to Pakistan first.
