Giles to play in Abberley memorial match

By Paul Bolton

Warwickshire’s director of cricket Ashley Giles will come out of retirement in September to captain a Warwickshire Legends side in a memorial match for Neal Abberley.

Giles, who was forced to retire from playing in 2007 because of a chronic hip injury, will lead a side that will also include Geoff Humpage, Dominic Ostler, David Hemp and Tim Munton against the current Warwickshire first team at Knowle & Dorridge on September 9.

The 30-over contest will raise funds for the Warwickshire Old County Cricketers’ Association and Neil Carter’s Benefit and will also celebrate the outstanding service that Abberley gave to Warwickshire before his death last August.

Abberley played for Warwickshire as a top order batsman but his lasting contribution to the county was as Second XI and batting coach. Abberley was also a member of Giles’s coaching team until his death from a lung complaint and he was also a major influence on the young slow left-armer during his early days on Warwickshire’s staff.

Giles was keen to play in the Knowle & Dorridge match to honour his mentor and the match will give the former England spinner an opportunity to show his current charges that he has not lost his touch.
