Shoulder operation to sideline Metters
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Warwickshire slow left-armer Chris Metters faces the prospect of missing the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury. The 21-year-old from Devon will have an operation on Saturday to repair a torn cartilage in his left shoulder when the full extent of the injury will be known.
Metters had injections earlier in the season in an attempt to settle the injury down but he decided to have surgery after scans revealed the tear. He made an encouraging start to his first-class career last season when he took 29 wickets in ten County Championship matches, including 6 for 65 against Worcestershire on debut.
Warwickshire's decision to re-sign former New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel as their overseas player meant that Metters’s first team opportunities were going to be more limited this year although they hoped that he might make an impression in the second half of the season.
But the injury, which has restricted him to just a handful of second team matches, seems to have put paid to those hopes. Slow left-armer Paul Best, who has just completed his second year at Cambridge University, will be Warwickshire’s back-up spinner to Patel in Metters’s absence.
