Sessay CC V Studley Royal CC – It's game on
England’s traditional quarter-final exit from a major football tournament last night means there is just one major sporting fixture to focus on this week. The regional final of the Yorkshire Tea Village Cup between Sessay and Studley Royal, which has twice been postponed, will be played to a conclusion on Tuesday night…and it promises to be a cracker.
The game is only on thanks to the fantastic community spirit that has seen the village of Sessay turn out in numbers armed with mops, brooms and towels to ensure the two local rivals can battle out a result on the field. The victors will claim local bragging rights and move one step closer to a Lord’s final – an occasion Sessay’s players remember only too well having won the competition in 2010.
The Cricketer organises the National Village Cup and its Editor Andrew Miller said: “All village captains are familiar with that task of frantically ringing around on match day to make sure their game can go ahead. But Sessay have taken their commitment to the cause to new heights.
“Their determination not to be beaten by the elements epitomises both the spirit of village cricket and the huge significance that the Yorkshire Tea Village Cup holds for both teams. Happily the weather is set fair on this third occasion, so may the best team win.”

NOTES TO EDITORS
The Cricketer is the world’s No.1 cricket magazine and the sport’s most inclusive and best read. Every month you'll find the biggest interviews with the likes of Stuart Broad, Kevin Pietersen and Ricky Ponting. There's top analysis from experts such as Simon Hughes and Mike Selvey, plus star columnists in England pair James Anderson and Graeme Swann. Enjoy the best club cricket coverage, plus our brand-new The Game section, which boasts comment from top pros and is the magazine’s own special ‘how to’ guide. As ever, you'll also find fantastic competitions, news, views and gossip from international and county dressing-rooms.
This year, the National Village Cup marches proudly into its fifth decade, and arguably it has never been more relevant to the sport it showcases so wonderfully. When Ben Brocklehurst, the former owner of The Cricketer, and Aidan Crowley, then chairman of the National Cricket Association, first conceived the competition in 1972, cricket’s place in the national psyche was unquestioned. The state of the sport at grassroots level in 2012 is far less clear-cut, which makes this annual gathering such a triumph of the game’s spirit. The allure of the final at Lord’s is unique, with the promise that a lucky 22 players will walk in the footsteps of legends if they make it through to the final on September 9. This year, as affiliate sponsors, MCC will also be laying on an official dinner in the Long Room. For amateur cricketers, you cannot hope to live the dream more vividly than that.
