Thornely signs Leics contract

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Former Sussex batsman Michael Thornely has signed a contract with Leicestershire for the rest of the season.

Thornely was released by Sussex two years ago but had retained an involvement with the county game by playing for the Unicorns in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition.

Last season Thornely made a century against Somerset and was invited for second team trials with Leicestershire earlier this season.

A century against Warwickshire at Hinckley secured Thornely a first team call up against Glamorgan at Cardiff where he followed up a career-best 97 in the first innings with a maiden first-class century in the second. Thornely has now put pen to paper to keep him at Grace Road until at least the end of the 2012 season.

Leicestershire chief executive Mike Siddall said: "We are delighted that Michael will be with us at least until the end of the season and we hope that he will continue the success he has had since joining up with the club.”
