England rest trio for Headingley ODI
England have chosen to rest Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann from the final ODI against West Indies at Headingley on Friday, after wrapping up the three-match series with a game to spare at The Oval.
Stuart Meaker, the Surrey fast bowler, Warwickshire allrounder Chris Woakes and Kent offspinner James Tredwell have been added to the squad, although Woakes had already been included as cover for Jade Dernbach, who was given compassionate leave following the death of Tom Maynard on Monday.
Broad, who is the Twenty20 captain, missed the final Test against West Indies at Edgbaston but Bresnan and Swann have been involved throughout the summer to date, and are England's only first-choice picks in all three formats of the game.
Meaker made his ODI debut against India last October, while Woakes made an impression in Australia before the World Cup, claiming 6 for 45 against Australia at Brisbane. Tredwell was England's reserve spinner in Sri Lanka in March, and featured in last year's World Cup in the subcontinent.
Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: "The fact that we have already won the NatWest series means we are able to take the opportunity to rest three players ahead of next week's series against Australia and take a closer look at players who are likely to feature in our limited overs planning going forward."
