Surrey's Tom Maynard dies aged 23
The Surrey batsman, Tom Maynard, has died at the age of 23 after reportedly being hit by a London Underground train at Wimbledon Park station.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning. According to the Metropolitan Police, a man matching Maynard's description was pulled over for driving erratically along Arthur Rd, SW19, at 4.15am. The driver ran away, and "at approximately 5.10am, a body of a man fitting the same description was found on tracks near Wimbledon Park station."
Maynard, who had played for Surrey in the FLt20 against Kent at Beckenham on Sunday afternoon, was recognised as one of the most talented young batsmen in the country. He had joined Surrey in 2011 after stating that his career at Glamorgan had become "untenable" following the acrimonious departure of his father, the former England batsman, Matthew.
In a statement, Surrey described Maynard as "an incredibly talented young batsman. His future potential was unlimited, with experts both inside and outside the club predicting he would soon follow in the footsteps of his father Matthew by graduating to full England honours."
Surrey chairman, Richard Thompson, said: "Our thoughts at this awful time are with Tom's family and friends and all those that were close to him.
"The impact Tom made in such a short period of time for Surrey CCC spoke for itself. There is a profound sense of loss at the passing of Tom. To lose anybody at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy."
ECB chairman Giles Clarke said: "This is a very sad day for everyone connected with Surrey County Cricket Club and for Glamorgan Cricket Club where Tom spent the early part of his career."
Surrey's FLt20 fixture against Hampshire on Wednesday has been postponed, as a mark of respect.
