Thornely hoping for Leics opportunity
By Paul Bolton
Leicestershire are trying to register former Sussex batsman Michael Thornely so that he can play in tomorrow’s LV= County Championship match against Glamorgan in Cardiff.
Thornely, 24, was released by Sussex two years ago but he has been playing second team cricket for Leicestershire this season and made an impression by making a century in last week’s nail-biting draw with Warwickshire.
Thornely has also been playing one-day cricket for the Unicorns in the Clydesdale Bank 40 cmpetition during the last two seasons and had a stint playing first-class cricket for the Mashonaland Eagles in Zimbabwe last winter.
Leicestershire have three batsmen - Rob Taylor, Will Jones and Shiv Thakor - on summer contracts but all of them are unavailable this week because of exam commitments.
The county also need to strengthen their batting depth because opener Will Jefferson has suffered a recurrence of a back injury that ruled him out of the first five weeks of the season.
Leicestershire do not yet know the extent of Jefferson’s latest injury setback but they do not it expect it to be a short-term absence.
Matt Boyce, who missed the heavy defeat by Kent at Canterbury last week, has recovered from a back injury and will replace Jefferson at the top of the order.
Paceman Robbie Joseph, who took 12 wickets in the match against Glamorgan on his Leicestershire debut in April, returns having been rested against Kent.
