Cumberland count cost of success

Cumberland are counting the cost of their qualification for the quarter-finals of the Minor Counties knockout. After a weekend win
against Cambridgeshire they have been drawn away at Cornwall on Sunday 17 June, meaning a 900-mile round trip for some of their players who will be involved in club fixtures across the north on the Saturday.

A supportive businessman from Leigh has covered the cost of an overnight coach to Truro, but a Cumberland official estimated the cost of the game as “at least £4000” - almost four times the central funding the county will receive. “Cornwall v Cumberland as a one-day game must rank as the silliest cricket fixture ever,” he said.
