Worcs boosted by Andrew appearance

By Paul Bolton

Worcestershire all-rounder Gareth Andrew is in line to make a surprise return to action in this week’s LV= County Championship match against Sussex at New Road.

Andrew has yet to play in a competitive match this season after he underwent major surgery to repair a knee ligament injury during the winter but he has been included in Worcestershire’s squad for the match.

He played in the pre-season friendly against Glamorgan in March as a batsman and also tested out his recovery from injury with an appearance against Oxford MCCU in The Parks in April.

He took one for 60 in 15 overs in that match and has since worked on building up his workload with regular net sessions. If Andrew does play against Sussex it will be two weeks earlier than Worcestershire expected when he had his operation and he will have to fill the gap left by leading wicket-taker Alan Richardson who has been ruled out with a torn shoulder muscle.

Richardson is likely to be out of action for three weeks but that would include only the Sussex match and the home game against Somerset in two weeks’ time. Worcestershire are not in Championship action next week. Left arm seamer Jack Shantry, whose only first-class of the season came at Oxford, is also in the squad to face Sussex.
