Jefferson returns for Leicestershire

By Paul Bolton

Leicestershire opening batsman Will Jefferson will make his first appearance of the season in this week's LV= County Championship match against Essex at Grace Road.

Jefferson, 32, has been sidelined since he aggravated a back injury on the pre-season tour to Barbados in March and has since had injections to settle the injury.

The former Essex and Nottinghamshire batsman has now regained fitness and he comes straight into the side at the expense of Kadeer Ali, formerly of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, who is playing on a match basis. Jefferson’s return means that Leicestershire will be close to full strength for the first time this season.

England Lions seamer Nathan Buck made his first Championship appearance of the year in the draw with Northamptonshire at Grace Road last week, having also recovered from a sore back which forced him to return early from the Barbados tour.

Leicestershire captain and former England swing bowler Matthew Hoggard also returned to action against Northamptonshire after a month out with a hand injury sustained throwing a rugby ball in training.

Leicestershire’s only remaining injured player is reserve wicketkeeper Paul Dixey who is recovering from a broken thumb sustained in a Second XI match last month.
