Richardson faces three-week lay-off
By Paul Bolton
Worcestershire are likely to be without their leading wicket-taker Alan Richardson for up to three weeks with a shoulder injury sustained in their draw with Surrey at New Road.
The 37-year-old former Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Middlesex seamer pulled up in his second over when Surrey followed on during the third day of the game and he has now been advised to rest for between two and three weeks.
Richardson will definitely miss this week’s County Championship match against Sussex at New Road and possibly the home match against Somerset which starts on May 30.
Richardson’s absence will blow to Worcestershire after he took 73 wickets for them last season to help keep them in Division One.
Worcestershire have rested Richardson from their Clydesdale Bank 40 and Friends Life t20 sides so far to keep him fit and fresh for the County Championship, a policy that worked in his first two seasons since he moved from Middlesex.
Richardson took 55 wickets in his first season at New Road to help Worcestershire win promotion and his career-best haul last year was recognised with his inclusion as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year.
