Vince has words of comfort for Jones

James Vince admitted feeling sorry for former teammate Simon Jones during Hampshire’s Clydesdale Bank 40 win against Glamorgan.

The former England fast bowler conceded 54 from five overs as Hampshire won their first one-day game of the season by 48 runs.

It was Jones’ first game back at The Ageas Bowl since returning to Glamorgan but he struggled as Vince (83) and Michael Carberry (60) put on 142 for Hampshire’s first wicket.

Vince said: “A few of their guys put some pace on the ball and it made it easier for us. I felt a bit sorry for Jonah. A good pitch for him is one with a lot of pace, so it probably wasn’t the best one for him to have to bowl on.”

Former England U-19 batsman Vince was also struck by a Jones beamer at one stage, but recovered to hit his third highest score in List A cricket. “Luckily it caught me on the glove so it didn’t actually hurt that much, and he apologised straight away,” he added.
