Warwickshire set for Champions Trophy bonanza

By Paul Bolton

Warwickshire are set to fill a hole in their finances by landing the ICC Champions Trophy final next year.

The county were left with a black hole in their finances last September when the ECB’s Major Match Group decided that Edgbaston would not stage an Ashes Test in 2013 or a Test against India in 2014.

The decision stunned Warwickshire officials but they have worked hard behind the scenes to limit the damage by persuading the ECB and ICC to bring some potentially lucrative matches to Edgbaston during the next major global cricketing event.

Final details of the Champions Trophy fixtures have yet to be confirmed but it is understood that Edgbaston will stage the final on June 23 next year. England’s group match against Australia is among the other matches that are expected to be confirmed at Edgbaston.

The Oval and the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff will be the other venues for the Champions Trophy with Glamorgan taking on the fixtures that were intended to be played at Lord’s in exchange for an England v New Zealand Test match which will now be played at Lord’s.

Next year’s Champions Trophy will be the seventh and last as the ICC concentrates on one championship for each format of the game.
