Hughes stakes his claim
By Andy Wilson
Chesney Hughes, largely a peripheral figure in Derbyshire’s promotion campaign, staked his first claim for a regular place in the new season with a sparkling century in the opening game of their pre-season tour to Barbados.
The 22-year-old left-hander made only one LV County Championship appearance last year, though he did play in all the Falcons’ one-day fixtures. After making such an impact since his debut in 2010, becoming the county’s youngest-ever first-class centurion the following year, it was a humbling experience.
But the Anguilla-born player spent much of his winter playing for Leeward Islands in the West Indies domestic competitions and looked in outstanding form as he retired out for 109, made off 127 balls with 18 fours and a six, when Derbyshire faced Northants at the North Stars club.
“I haven’t really stopped playing. I got about three weeks off before Christmas, then I was straight into the t20s and back to Derby,” he said.
“I did a little bit of a tweak to my technique which feels a lot more comfortable now, so going into the game I felt confident I would do well. It was no surprise really I felt that way out there.
“I just needed to get my bat coming on straight, get my muscle memory going and just become a better batsman. Do all the general things right and that comes with time - hitting a lot of balls, experience and not getting out in certain ways.
“It’s nothing too technical, just playing, basically. I think I’m improving and I’m looking forward to the season.
“Last year wasn’t the best year but it did a lot for me as well. It got me grounded really and made me realise I had to work hard and be a lot more professional.
“Last year was a bit of a learning curve but I know I will be fine next season. I feel like I’m progressing in my game and that is going to manifest in the scorebook.”
With Billy Godleman batting through the first session for a solid 37 in his first innings for his new county and Wes Durston adding an unbeaten 65, Derbyshire finished the first day of their two-day fixture on 313-9 and will take their turn to field on the second day of the match.
