Hughes starts with a hundred

Chesney Hughes wasted little time in registering his first Derbyshire century of 2013 when he stroked an elegant 109 on the first day of the two-day county friendly against Northamptonshire at North Stars CC.

With both sides enjoying the warm Barbados sunshine honours were just about even at stumps as Derbyshire closed on 313-9. Dan Redfern was unbeaten on 66 at the close.

Lee Daggett was the pick of the Northants bowlers, claiming 3-35 from 16 overs. Amongst his victims was Billy Godleman, who battled through the morning session, only to fall soon after lunch for 37.

Matthew Spriegel, on his first bowl for Northants after leaving Surrey, took 2-22, whilst there were also wickets for Oliver Stone, Con de Lange and David Willey.

Three Hampshire batsmen reached half centuries on the opening day of their match with Warwickshire at Windward CC.

Michael Carberry and James Vince fell cheaply, to Chris Wright and Recardo Gordon respectively, but Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson led the fightback by putting on 118 together.

Adams eventually retired on 57 not out but Dawson and Sean Ervine were still together at stumps as Hampshire closed on 237-2 from their 90 overs, Dawson was on 80, Ervine had 60.

Yorkshire have taken sufficient players on tour to start their pre-season with an inter-club match at the Desmond Haynes Oval.
Phil Jaques retired on 103 as his side, the Rafiq XI, made 268-5 declared, with the other innings of note Liam Plunkett’s 69. New signing Jack Brooks fared well with the ball, collecting 1-21 from his 10 overs.

Responding, the Lyth XI were 133-3 at stumps, with Adil Rashid unbeaten on 45 after Andrew Lyth had fallen for 39.

All three matches continue on Thursday, whilst Nottinghamshire, the latest side to arrive on the island, begin their preparations with a training session at the cricket academy run by their former all-rounder Franklyn Stephenson.
