Yorkshire head out for T20 defence

By Dave Bracegirdle

Yorkshire fly to Barbados this week looking to retain the T20 Cup they won a year ago.

Working under Jason Gillespie for the first time, the Tykes enjoyed a successful trip to the Caribbean in 2012 and emerged as winners of the eight-team tournament after defeating Warwickshire in the final.

With 22 players making the trip they will all take part in a 2-day practice match at Carlton CC on Wednesday and Thursday before the T20 next weekend.

Playing as the Vikings for the first time, Yorkshire first face Hampshire Royals in a repeat of last year’s domestic final which they lost. Depending on the outcome, further matches in either the Cup or Plate competition will be played next Sunday.

The tour will conclude with a pair of two-day games, both played at Windward CC starting on Tuesday 19th when they face Northamptonshire. Three days later Nottinghamshire will provide the opposition.

Neither Tim Bresnan, recuperating after elbow surgery, or Gary Ballance, resting after recently returning from the England Lions tour of Australia, will make the trip.

Otherwise a full Yorkshire squad will be involved, with the county’s Players’ Association helping with the funding to allow three Academy youngsters, Ben Coad, William Rhodes and Lewis Stabler, to take part.
