New Road role is honour for Elliott
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Former Worcestershire wicketkeeper and chairman John Elliott has been elected as the county’s new president.
Elliott, 71, succeeds his former county team-mate Duncan Fearnley who was president for two years until this week’s annual meeting.
Elliott was Worcestershire’s chairman from 1998 to 2006 and played in ten first-class matches for the county between 1959-65.
He was understudy to Roy Booth so his first team opportunities were limited but he played three matches in 1965 when Worcestershire retained the County Championship.
Elliott’s 26 career dismissal include five in the first innings of the match against Pakistan Eaglets at New Road in 1963 when he made three stumpings and took two catches. Four of the wickets were taken by slow left-armer Norman Gifford who is now Worcestershire’s spin bowling coach.
“It is a privilege and an honour for me and I am following in the footsteps of some great presidents,” Elliott said. “I have been around a long time and I’ve seen many ups and downs over the years – great wins, great losses, promotion, relegation, good sides and poor sides. I’m a great believer that all sport goes in cycles and I believe it will be our turn again soon, hopefully this year.”
Worcestershire chairman Martyn Price and Professor David Green, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Worcester, were both re-elected as non-executive directors with former county and England players Tim Curtis and Neal Radford elected to the board for three years.
