Root gets incremental contract
By Graham Hardcastle
Joe Root has been awarded an increment contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The Yorkshire batsman has played one Test, two Twenty20 and six one-day internationals for England, the latest coming in the early hours of Sunday morning against New Zealand when he scored 56 in a losing cause at Hamilton.
The ECB awarded such contracts on a points system, and a player must reach 20 points in a 12-month period. Five points are awarded for a Test appearance and two for either a T20 or one-day international.
Root, 22, has made a fine start to his international career. Since scoring 73 on Test debut against India at Nagpur in December he has gone on to cement his place in the middle order of the one-day team with five successive scores of 31 or more.
National selector Geoff Miller said: “Congratulations to Joe Root, who has made his international debut in all three formats in a short period of time and has made important contributions for England so far this winter.”
With a busy summer of international cricket ahead, Yorkshire look likely to have to find a new opening partner for Adam Lyth in County Championship cricket and Joe Sayers and Phil Jaques will be the leading candidates.
