Brown set to get Warwickshire job
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
County champions Warwickshire are set to confirm former Scotland and England one-day international all-rounder Dougie Brown as their new director of cricket.
An announcement is expected tomorrow morning, with a press conference due to be held at Edgbaston tomorrow afternoon when Brown will be officially unveiled as successor to his close friend Ashley Giles.
Brown will step up from his current job as second team coach and academy director at Edgbaston and his appointment will mean continuity for Warwickshire.
It will also mean disappointment for another member of Warwickshire’s successful coaching team as bowling coach Graeme Welch made it to the final shortlist of three who had a second interview last week.
West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson was also on the shortlist for the Warwickshire job with former Warwickshire batsman David Hemp and ECB performance director David Parsons among those who dropped out after the first round of interviews. Gibson is likely to sign a new three-year contract with the West Indies having missed out on the Warwickshire job.
Brown spent all of his county career at Edgbaston having joined Warwickshire in 1990 and he was a key member of the Warwickshire side that won county cricket’s first treble in 1994. He coached Namibia in the 2003 World Cup and joined Warwickshire’s coaching staff in 2007 when Giles replaced Mark Greatbatch as director of cricket.
He has continued to play for Barnt Green in the Birmingham & District Premier League but his promotion to the top job at Edgbaston will mean an end to his playing days.
Brown’s appointment will also mean that Warwickshire have a vacancy for a second team coach and academy director to fill. Former wicketkeeper Tony Frost, currently on the groundstaff at Edgbaston and also working as a part-time batting coach, is a possible candidate to join the coaching team on a full-time basis.
