Grace Road cakes make a difference

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

The outfield at Leicestershire’s Grace Road headquarters is being improved with the proceeds from the sale of homemade cakes last summer.

The Friends of Grace Road, Leicestershire’s Supporters’ Association, has been an important fund-raiser for the county for more than  40 years, with the latest cheque for £8,500 being used to re-seed the outfield which suffered during a summer of drought followed by flooding last year.

The money has been raised from the sale of homemade and other cakes plus a range of club souvenirs at home matches throughout last summer and is a valuable source of revenue to one of the smaller counties.

“The Friends of Grace Road are an intrinsic part of the club,” said Leicestershire’s chief executive Mike Siddall. “They have supported us for over 40 years and visitors and members alike enjoy the homemade cakes that are baked by a band of dedicated volunteers.

“This donation has now paid for the reseeding of the outfield, a crucial undertaking to improve the playing area at the County Ground. The club truly appreciates the hard work and effort that has resulted in such a generous sum.”

The Friends of Grace Road’s latest donation is particularly welcome following a summer so badly blighted by the weather.
