Giles successor to be named within week

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Warwickshire are expected to announce their new director of cricket by the end of next week. All the interviews have been completed but Warwickshire are awaiting the result of psychometric tests which the three shortlisted candidates – Dougie Brown, Graeme Welch and Ottis Gibson – undertook.

The county also have a cricket committee meeting scheduled for next Tuesday by which time they hope to have the successor to Ashley Giles, who departed Edgbaston last month to become England’s one-day and Twenty20 coach, in place.

Brown, Warwickshire’s second team coach and academy director, and Welch, the county’s highly-regarded bowling coach, remain under contract at Edgbaston and could easily slot into the new role if they were appointed.

But Gibson’s position is more complicated. His contract as West Indies head coach is due to expire in March but news of his interest in the Warwickshire job has persuaded the West Indies Board to offer him a three-year extension.

Gibson has yet to commit himself to the West Indies deal, which is likely to offer considerably more than the Warwickshire job, but he has flown with the squad to Australia to prepare for their forthcoming one-day series.

The former England bowling coach guided the West Indies to the ICC World Twenty20 title in the autumn but he is still based in England having worked as a regional coach for the ECB before he resumed his playing career with Leicestershire and then with Durham.
