Wardlaw prepares for Scotland bow
By Graham Hardcastle
Yorkshire’s fringe fast bowler Iain Wardlaw, who worked in the accounts department of a graphic design company as recently as the early stages of the 2011 summer, is on the verge of making his international debut with Scotland.
The 27-year-old has been invited to a training camp in Edinburgh across the next two weekends, and could play for them in their World Cricket League fixtures against Afghanistan in the UAE during the first two weekends in March. Although born in Dewsbury, Wardlaw qualifies for the Scots through having a Scottish father.
Even though the idea of him playing for Scotland first arose towards the latter stages of last summer, Wardlaw admitted the call to head north of the border was a surprise: “It is a great honour to be called into the training camp with the national side,” he said.
“It did come as a shock, but I’m relishing the opportunity of training with the national squad and hope that I can impress enough to force my way into the squad for the group of matches against Afghanistan.”
It has been a busy winter for Wardlaw. He impressed during the latter stages of Yorkshire’s Champions League t20 campaign in South Africa in October, culminating in picking up the wicket of MS Dhoni, before signing a new two-year deal at Headingley shortly afterwards. He also got engaged to his new fiancee Charlotte over Christmas.
