Sarwan recall rings alarm bells at Leics
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Ramnaresh Sarwan’s recall by the West Indies after an 18-month absence has caused potential problems for Leicestershire.
The 32-year-old batsman thought that his international career was over when he agreed to replace Matthew Hoggard as Leicestershire’s four-day captain recently.
But a successful first season at Grace Road has helped to secure Sarwan a place in the West Indies squad for their forthcoming tour to Australia.
Sarwan's position with Leicestershire will become a complicated one if his return to international one-day and Twenty20 cricket is extended into the rest of this year, following the five ODIs and one T20 international that West Indies are due to play in Australia.
The West Indies will go to Zimbabwe after their Australia tour and they then have the Champions Trophy in England in June and a home triangular series in July and August.
Leicestershire have made contact with Sarwan to congratulate him on his West Indies recall but they have also asked him for an early steer on his likely availability for county cricket in case they need to start the search for a locum overseas player.
“From my angle I will probably have to investigate possible options but finding the right type of player who is available for all forms of cricket who meets the work permit criteria is not easy,” said Leicestershire coach Phil Whitticase.
