Yoga helping to tune up Warwicks

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

County champions Warwickshire have got their bowlers doing yoga in an attempt to improve their flexibility as they prepare to defend their title.

Warwickshire have enlisted the help of Bromsgrove-based sports yoga expert Graham Eccles, who runs Ginger Sports Performance Yoga, to run a weekly session with their seam bowlers plus former England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose who is troubled by a hip complaint that required surgery last winter.

“Keith Barker did some work with Graham Eccles before Christmas to improve his flexibility. Barks liked it, he is feeling the benefits  and he was full of praise for the work that Graham did with him,” said Warwickshire bowling coach Graeme Welch.

“So we’ve got him involved working mainly with the bowling unit but also Tim Ambrose, on specific exercises to improve their flexibility. Graham does a two-hour session with them each week. It’s sport-specific yoga, it’s something different to what we have done before and we hope that we will see the benefits of the work during the season.”

Warwickshire’s decision to bring in Eccles to work with their players suggests that they are still paying attention to detail as they seek to make improvements to ensure that they prove hard to beat in their title defence.
