Young quick Barber on U19 World Cup trail

By Bruce Talbot

Hampshire starlet Tom Barber is looking forward to this month’s England Under-19 tour to South Africa. The 18-year-old is in a 15-man squad that will play nine matches during the first of three separate series aimed at preparing England for the ICC Under-19 World Cup in February 2014.

After two ‘Tests’ and two tour matches, the U19s will play five one-day internationals against their South Africa  counterparts. Barber, who comes from Bournemouth and studies physics, has developed into an exciting left-arm fast bowler with the Hampshire Academy.

“I’ve put an enormous amount of effort into enhancing my game and feel I’ve come on leaps and bounds in the last two years,” he said. “To have the opportunity to go to Cape Town and play at somewhere like Newlands is simply fantastic.

“I’m further ahead in terms of my development than I thought I’d be at this stage, and I’m fully focused on achieving further development in my game."

Meanwhile, Hampshire have confirmed that their senior squad will return to Barbados for a third successive pre-season, in March.
