Warwickshire deny Saker job offer
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Warwickshire have denied reports that they offered England bowling coach David Saker the job as their new director of cricket.
The county champions are seeking a replacement for Ashley Giles, who has been appointed England’s full-time one-day and Twenty20 coach and hope to make an appointment by the end of the month.
Warwickshire contacted Saker before Christmas after reports that he might be interested in applying to replace Giles but were told that he intended to stay with England.
But Warwickshire did not offer the former Tasmania and Victoria seamer the job and they remain on course to draw up a shortlist of candidates who will be invited for interview once they have sifted through the pile of applications they received before the December 17 deadline.
“In the light of press speculation that was going around we contacted David to clarify the situation with him and ask whether he wanted to apply or not,” said Warwickshire chairman Norman Gascoigne.
“He came back to us and said that the timing was not right for him and that he intended to continue with England. That is as far as it went. I can categorically say that at no stage did we offer him the job.”
Warwickshire are expected to draw up a shortlist of candidates early next week and start interviewing them by the middle of the month.
Andy Moles, Dougie Brown and Graeme Welch, three members of the Warwickshire side that won county cricket’s first treble in 1994, have confirmed that they have applied for the job.
Moles has coached Kenya, Scotland and New Zealand as well as first-class sides in South Africa and New Zealand since he retired from playing in 1998.
Welch, a former Derbyshire captain, has spent the last three years working as Warwickshire’s bowling coach and former Scotland and England one-day international all-rounder Brown is currently second team coach and academy director at Edgbaston.
