International coaching still appeals, says Moores
By Graham Hardcastle
Lancashire coach Peter Moores has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Old Trafford, but has admitted he could be tempted by a return to international cricket after 2014.
The ex-England coach will remain with the Red Rose county for the next two summers at least, the second of which will be his fifth in charge of the county he supported when he was growing up in Macclesfield.
His new deal gives him the opportunity to win a third LV= County Championship title as a coach. His first was with Sussex in 2003 and second with Lancashire in 2011. He cannot win it next year, of course, as Lancashire will be playing Division Two cricket following relegation.
Moores, controversially sacked by the ECB in early 2009, was linked with the Sri Lankan coach's job earlier this year before penning a new two-year contract with Lancashire in January. He has now committed his future to county cricket for an extra year.
Moores celebrates his 50th birthday today and said: "I wouldn’t rule it [a return to international cricket] out. I loved being involved in international cricket. There is a different pressure on you, a pressure working with some of the best players in the world. But I enjoyed it, right from my time at the National Academy and seeing young players coming through.
"Being at Lancashire and committing to that time frame seems right for me at the moment. It gives both me and the club some stability for the next few years. After that we will see where we are. I have done that throughout my coaching career because I think it keeps you fresh.
"These are exciting times for the club. Not only have we got a young crop of players who are developing all the time, the stadium has changed and we have a new chief executive (Daniel Gidney).
"It just seemed the perfect fit to sign for another year. We all know the direction we want the club to go in. We have had some tremendous success in winning the title, then we had a frustrating year last year. First of all we need to put that right."
