Sarwan appointed Leics four-day captain

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Leicestershire have appointed former West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan as their new four-day captain following the decision of Matthew Hoggard to stand down.

Hoggard has captained Leicestershire since he joined from his native Yorkshire three years ago and he led them to the Friends Life t20 title in 2011.

But he handed over the captaincy of the one-day and Twenty20 teams to Josh Cobb towards the end of last season and has now handed over the four-day captaincy to Sarwan after three disappointing seasons of County Championship cricket.

Hoggard said: “I have enjoyed being captain over the past three years but I feel that it is the right time to hand over the reins.”

Leicestershire chief executive Mike Siddall said: “The club wishes to acknowledge the contribution Matthew has made as captain over the past three seasons, leading the team to a fantastic third t20 trophy win last year. We now have the opportunity to put a succession plan in place for the future.”

Sarwan proved a popular and successful choice as overseas player last season and his experience of captaining the West Indies at international level made him the obvious choice to succeed Hoggard.

Head coach Phil Whitticase added: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Matthew over the past three years, especially during our successful t20 campaign. It is important for everyone to get behind Ronnie as we look to take the club forward.”

Cobb will be Sarwan’s vice-captain in four-day cricket, and is clearly being groomed to be a future captain in all formats at Grace Road.
