Giles successor to be decided in January

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

County champions Warwickshire hope to appoint their new director of cricket and successor to Ashley Giles by the end of next month.

The vacancy, which has been created by Giles’s promotion to become England’s full-time one-day international and Twenty20 coach, has been advertised and interested candidates have until December 17 to submit an application. The shortlisted candidates will be notified in early January and with interviews likely to take place by the end of that month.

Warwickshire are keen to make a swift appointment as their players will step up their training when they return from the Christmas break in the first week of January ahead of a pre-season trip to Barbados in March.

The county will also travel to Abu Dhabi in March to play the MCC in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season before they return to England and play Oxford MCCU in The Parks in a first-class match on April 5.

Warwickshire’s advert for the new director of cricket states: “Candidates wishing to apply for the post should have a proven track record in first-class cricket as both a player and a coach. Ideally qualified to ECB Level 4 (or equivalent), applicants should be able to demonstrate the successful application of their technical knowledge to drive individual performance improvements and successful team results.

“We are seeking an individual who can deliver a truly excellent, high-performance team environment based on a strong and healthy culture. The successful candidate will display high personal standards and integrity backed up by patterns of consistent behaviour.

“Determined and resilient, the new director of cricket will possess strong written, verbal and numerical skills to add to their passion for the game.”

The successful applicant will be appointed on a permanent basis rather than on a fixed-term contract “in the expectation that candidates are determined to deliver sustained success over an extended period“.
