Warwicks decide to advertise top job vacancy

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Warwickshire have decided to advertise the coaching vacancy created by the departure of their director of cricket Ashley Giles to become England’s full-time one-day and Twenty20 coach.

There were suggestions that Warwickshire might decide to promote one of the existing members of their coaching team, bowling coach Graeme Welch and assistant coach Dougie Brown, to replace former England spinner Giles. But Warwickshire’s cricket committee will be asked at a meeting on Monday (December 3) to approve advertising the post.

Welch and Brown are certain to apply but Warwickshire are keen to see who else might be interested in taking one of the top jobs in county cricket and a post made more attractive by the fact that Warwickshire are reigning county champions and things have been set up nicely by Giles.

Warwickshire have already had CVs through from four interested coaches and have been approached by agents representing three more. Former Warwickshire opening batsman Andy Moles is expected to submit an application and the post is likely to attract interest from another county favourite in Trevor Penney, currently assistant to India head coach Duncan Fletcher.

Other potential candidates are likely to include former Australia paceman Craig McDermott who, along with Moles, was shortlisted for the vacant Somerset director of cricket job.

It is believed that both Moles and McDermott have already been told that they will not be offered the job as successor to Brian Rose at Taunton.
