Trescothick to see out career at Somerset

By Richard Latham

Marcus Trescothick has pledged the remainder of his career to Somerset by signing a new three-year contract. The former England opener, who will turn 37 on Christmas Day, made his first team debut back in 1993, since when he has played in almost 200 first-class matches for the county.

Trescothick, currently club captain, has scored more than 13,500 runs in those games at an average of 43.72, including 37 centuries and a best of 284. Since his England career was ended by a stress-related illness in 2006, he has played regularly for Somerset, leading them to two runners-up finishes in the County Championship.

Trescothick said: “It’s always nice to sign a new contract with Somerset. I have been here for 20 years now and this is just another extension to my playing career. It takes me to the age of 40, which is my first target as far a continuing to play is concerned and we will go from there.”

Somerset chief executive Guy Lavender said: “'Marcus is a fantastic captain, player and person, so we are delighted that he has agreed a new deal with the club where he has played since he was 17 years old.

“We hope he will continue to play for many years to come and that in the not too distant future he will achieve his ambition of winning the County Championship title with Somerset.”
