North appointed as Glamorgan one-day captain

By Richard Thomas

Glamorgan have named Marcus North as their captain for both one-day competitions next season. Mark Wallace continues as the Welsh county’s club captain and four-day skipper, but it means Jim Allenby loses the captaincy of the Twenty20 team.

“I’m honoured to be recognised by the management and to be given the chance to captain Glamorgan in limited-overs format,” said North, the 33-year-old former Australia Test batsman.

“My one-day record is pretty good, having captained Western Australia on and off for eight years, and I’m sure the extra responsibility will bring the best out of me as leader and player.”

Glamorgan's head of elite performance Matthew Mott said: “Both Marcus and Mark have wide-ranging experience, so splitting the roles of captain between red and White-ball cricket makes a lot of sense. These two guys working together is a great fit, with Mark leading for four-day cricket and Marcus for the one-day role.

“It’s a massive year for Mark, as a benefit year does take up a lot of time, so there is a balance required, but Mark is ambitious about County Championship cricket and that reflects our drive to get promoted to Division One.

“I would also like to personally acknowledge 2012 player of the year Jim Allenby for his understanding during this change in leadership. Jim led the t20 campaign last year very well considering the conditions that we encountered. Jim does have great leadership attributes and captaincy ambitions and he is a key player for Glamorgan going forward.

“However, Marcus has had a year with us so, although it will be a transition for him, it’s an opportunity to make a big change with our on-the-field resolve and ultimately for us to perform better on the field. Marcus is a leader, with great cricket credentials, and is passionate about making a difference at Glamorgan.”

On retaining his role as club captain, Wallace said: “I'm delighted to have been re-appointed for next season. I felt the split captaincy worked well last year both for myself and for the team and as such I look forward to leading the side in the County Championship while giving my full support and backing to Marcus North for one-day cricket.”
