Wernars extends his Sussex contract

By Bruce Talbot

Sussex's South African born all-rounder Kirk Wernars has signed a one-year extension to his contract which ties him to the county until 2014.

The 21-year-old made two County Championship and five Clydesdale Bank 40 appearances last season and coach Mark Robinson believes he has the ability to nail down a regular place across all formats in the Sussex side.

Robinson said: "Kirk made good strides last season, especially with the ball. At his age he has the potential to become a genuine all-rounder."

Wernars, who joined Sussex in 2011, scored heavily when he captained the Second XI last season and believes 2012 may turn out to be his breakthrough year.

He said: "Since joining the club I feel my game has come a very long way, and I have grown as a cricketer. I'm delighted to sign the new contract and continue my development."
