O'Brien set to sign three-year Leics deal
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Leicestershire are set to sign Ireland international wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O’Brien from Northamptonshire on a three-year contract.
O’Brien has been in talks with Leicestershire for two weeks and was due for further negotiations at Grace Road today. The player is keen to sort out his future before he flies out to Tanzania tomorrow for an 11-day tour with the MCC.
He has a year remaining on his contract with Northamptonshire but has been told that he has no long-term future at Wantage Road and has been given permission to speak to other counties.
Leicestershire have a vacancy for a wicketkeeper as they released Paul Dixey before the end of the season and they are also looking for someone their top order as Will Jefferson has been forced to retire because of a chronic hip complaint.
O’Brien, who has appeared in 51 one-day internationals and 20 Twenty20 internationals for Ireland, played for Kent from 2004 to 2006 and joined Northamptonshire in 2007.
