Miller only partly available for Champions League
By Graham Hardcastle
Yorkshire have revealed David Miller’s availability for their forthcoming Champions League t20 campaign in South Africa.
The powerful left-handed batsman, man-of-the-match in August’s Friends Life t20 final against Hampshire at Cardiff, will be unavailable for the second of two qualifying matches and then three of four Group B matches should they progress into the main event.
He will play in their opening match against Uva Next from Sri Lanka at Johannesburg on October 9, but will miss the clash with Trinidad and Tobago at Centurion the following day due to four-day commitments with South African franchise the Dolphins.
If Yorkshire make it into the group stages, the 24-year-old will miss matches against Sydney Sixers, Mumbai Indians and Highveld Lions before returning for their final match against Chennai Super Kings on October 22. Miller would then be available for the semi-finals and the final.
“We would have to progress quite a long way in the competition to see a lot of David,” confirmed Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon.
The bulk of Yorkshire’s 15-man squad will fly out to Johannesburg next Tuesday, although Miller, Phil Jaques and Jonny Bairstow will meet them there. While Bairstow is at the World Twenty20 with England, Jaques flew back to Australia at the end of the county summer for some rest and recuperation.
Meanwhile, Moxon has confirmed the search for a new fast bowler goes on after missing out on James Harris, who has left Glamorgan to join to Middlesex. “Work’s ongoing in terms of trying to make signings,” he said. “There’s nothing to report. We’re in discussions, but nothing definite’s happened yet.”
