Another award for emerging Wright

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Chris Wright’s outstanding season with Warwickshire has gained further recognition with the seamer being voted the county’s Players’ Player of the Year.

The former Middlesex and Essex seamer took 62 wickets to help Warwickshire win the LV= County Championship for the seventh time and his efforts have been rewarded with a place in the England Performance Programme squad for their tour to India in November and December.

Wright’s efforts were appreciated by his team-mates who voted him their player of the year and he was presented with his trophy at the end-of-season awards night at Edgbaston.

All-rounder Rikki Clarke was voted the Members’ Player of the Year for his consistency which included three County Championship centuries and some memorable slip catches.

Former England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose was voted the Grizzlies Player of the Year by Warwickshire’s young supporters and batsman Laurie Evans took the Most Improved Second XI Player award even though the second team lost more than 2,000 overs during a wet summer.

Steve Rouse, the former Warwickshire seamer and Edgbaston’s head groundsman from 1994 until last year, was also recognised for more than 40 years of service to the county with the presentation of Honorary Life Membership.

Rouse retired from his groundsman’s job last September but he is still involved with the county as a bowling coach at the Edgbaston indoor school.
