Kent squad signs up for 2013

By Mark Baldwin

Kent have today taken the unprecedented step of announcing that the club's entire core squad of 20 players remain in place for the 2013 season - including a group of twelve players who have signed new contract extensions.

The dozen who have re-committed to Kent include the experienced trio Geraint Jones, James Tredwell and Darren Stevens, while three players who signed for the club last winter - Mark Davies, Ben Harmison and Brendan Nash - have also signed extended contracts.

There is speculation that former West Indies Test batsman Nash, who played for Kent last season as an overseas player, will take up Kolpak status at some stage in the future.

Recently-capped batsman Sam Northeast, who scored 880 County Championship runs in 2012 including three hundreds, has signed a year's extension to his current contract. Sam Billings, another of the club's youngsters to impress during the summer, has also extended his contract along with fellow Academy graduates Fabian Cowdrey, Ben Kemp, Ivan Thomas and Ashley Shaw.

Adam Ball, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Alex Blake, Matt Coles, Rob Key, Mike Powell, Adam Riley and Charlie Shreck all remain in contract for the 2013 season.

Kent's chairman of cricket Graham Johnson said; “I am extremely pleased to announce that the core of the 2012 squad have committed their futures to Kent Cricket.

“During 2012, the players have performed well and we will seek to build upon this during 2013. I am particularly pleased that we have a great number of talented young cricketers coming through the system, and this season they have demonstrated their great potential.”
