Madsen is Derbyshire's player of the year

By Andy Wilson

The leader of Derbyshire’s title-winning return to Division One of the LV County Championship, Wayne Madsen, has been named the club’s player of the year.

Not only did the 28-year-old lead the county back to the top flight for the first time since 2000 in his first season as captain, he also finished their leading run-scorer in first-class cricket with 928 runs at an average of 37.12.

The highlight of his season as a batsman was an unbeaten 231 at Northampton in August. That was a career-best score and the 10th highest ever made by a Derbyshire player, featuring in a ninth-wicket stand of 261 with Tom Poynton that was only 23 runs away from a new world record for the wicket.

Tony Palladino, who was the supporters’ club’s choice as player of the year, took the club’s Championship player of the year award after taking 56 wickets in the competition, the second-largest haul in the division.

The Clydesdale Bank 40 player of the year was Mark Turner, the Falcons’ top wicket-taker with 17, while Wes Durston, their leading run-scorer, was named t20 player of the year.
