Anniversary year fuels Yorks title ambition

By Graham Hardcastle

Yorkshire are targeting the LV= County Championship title in 2013, the county’s 150th anniversary. Division Two promotion was secured with a third successive win against Essex at Chelmsford last week, and the White Rose are already looking beyond next month’s Champions League t20 campaign.

Fast bowlers James Harris and Jack Brooks are on their radar to provide competition for the likes of Steve Patterson, Ryan Sidebottom and Moin Ashraf, while they would jump at the chance to re-sign Australian Mitchell Starc if he was available at any stage.

First-team coach Jason Gillespie said: “We certainly won’t be making up the numbers next year. I believe we’ve got a real chance of performing strongly and challenging for a trophy, that’s for sure. There’s no question of that.

“That’s certainly the frame of mind we’ll be going into 2013 with. We’ll be going out there to challenge for top spot. There’s no reason why we can’t compete heavily for big trophies. We’ve got the players, and the players have got the attitude to play good positive cricket.

“As a coaching staff we just want them to put in all the effort they can and have a positive attitude. Wherever we end up we end up, but I’m confident this playing group can go a long way.”
