Solanki denied chance of Worcs farewell
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Former Worcestershire captain Vikram Solanki has played his last match for the county. Solanki, who will join Surrey for next season, was dropped for Worcestershire’s last two LV= County Championship matches but it was expected that he would be recalled for a farewell appearance against Somerset at Taunton tomorrow.
But Worcestershire have not included Solanki in their squad for the trip south even though they were relegated after they were beaten inside three days by new champions Warwickshire last week.
It means that Solanki made a low-key farewell appearance for Worcestershire in the Clydesdale Bank 40 against Lanacashire at New Road two weeks ago. Solanki fielded but did not bat in that match and was told during the game that he would not be playing against Middlesex the following day.
Solanki was greeted with warm applause when he strolled across the New Road outfield during the lunch interval on the third day of the Warwickshire match last Thursday but he will not now have the chance to go out with bat held high after playing a farewell innings.
Worcestershire have added all-rounder Gareth Andrew, who has recovered from the calf injury that ruled him out of the Warwickshire defeat, and England Under-19 international Aneesh Kapil to last week’s side.
