Northants complete Spriegel signing
By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent
Northamptonshire have completed the signing of batsman Matthew Spriegel from Surrey on a two-year contract. The 25-year-old left-hander turned down the offer of a new contract with Surrey and also rejected an offer from Hampshire to join Northamptonshire.
Spriegel, a former Loughborough University player, progressed through Surrey’s youth system and made his debut for them in 2008.
But he has been considered mainly as a one-day specialist by his native county and has moved to Northamptonshire in search of more regular County Championship cricket.
“We are delighted that Matthew had decided to join Northants. He is exactly the type of multi-dimensional cricketer we have been looking to attract to the club and will give us some excellent options with both bat and ball in the short and longer forms of the game,” said Northamptonshire chief executive David Smith.
“It is no secret that our white-ball cricket performances over the last 18 months have fallen below both the club and supporters' expectations and I am sure Matthew will assist us in our efforts to re-establish a competitive team in this form of the game.
“He was an integral part of Surrey's Clydesdale Bank 40 trophy winning team at Lord's in 2011, so also brings trophy-winning experience to the club.”
