Ambrose expected to be fit for Lord's showpiece

By Paul Bolton, County News Correspondent

Warwickshire have received a boost ahead of next week’s Clydesdale Bank 40 final against Hampshire with the news that wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose is likely to be fit to play in the Lord’s showpiece.

Ambrose was unable to take any part in the semi-final win over Lancashire at Old Trafford after he suffered a thigh muscle strain watching from the dressing room.

The former England Test player suffered the injury lowering his legs from a raised position and Warwickshire had to summon reserve Richard Johnson from a Birmingham League match at Walsall to deputise for him.

Warwickshire initially feared that Ambrose would miss the chance to play in his first Lord’s final but scans which were taken this morning suggest that the injury is not as serious as was first feared.

Ambrose has a grade one tear of the thigh muscle and is rated as having a good chance of being fit to face Hampshire. Johnson, who had been on loan at Derbyshire, is keeping in the current LV= County Championship match against Worcestershire at New Road.

It was expected that Johnson would join Derbyshire on a permanent deal at the end of the season but that move is now in doubt because Tom Poynton scored runs while Johnson was sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury.

Warwickshire have offered Johnson a contract for next season but are waiting to hear whether he intends to accept it.
